With the certification of the carbon sink potential of plant carbon, Carbon Standards International (standard setter) provides for the first time a method to certify the carbon sink potential of plant carbon. This is a crucial step towards the sustainable development of planetary carbon sinks.

The comprehensively expanded version 2.0 was published on 1 January 2021.

Through the various carbon standards that Carbon Standards International has developed over the last few years, producers of charcoal can certify the carbon sink potential of the charcoal they produce. Once the charcoal is mixed into agricultural substrates such as feed, compost, manure and fertiliser, or into durable materials such as concrete, resins or plastics, the carbon sink potential can be converted into carbon sink certificates.

The carbon sink potential of the charcoal also takes into account all emissions caused during the production of the charcoal. It thus encompasses the complete carbon footprint of the plant carbon.

Customer benefits

With the issued certificate you have the possibility to offer and sell the carbon sink potential on an online marketplace. You can also use the certified amount of CO2eq for your internal communication and for the positive climate balance of your company.

Basics

The basis for the calculation of these carbon sinks are different standards, which are summarised under the Global C-Sink.

For the industrial production of vegetable carbon and the calculation of the potentials, the European Biochar Standard is used.

For the artisanal production of vegetable carbon, the Global Artisan C-Sink standard is used.
